Choose which service to use for route calculations

Your API key is stored locally in your browser and never sent to our servers.

🔑 Getting a Google Maps API Key

  1. Go to the Google Cloud Console
  2. Create a new project or select an existing one
  3. Navigate to "APIs & Services" → "Library"
  4. Search for and enable these APIs:
    • Directions API (for routing)
    • Maps JavaScript API (required)
    • Geocoding API (optional, for location search)
  5. Go to "APIs & Services" → "Credentials"
  6. Click "Create Credentials" → "API Key"
  7. Copy your new API key and paste it in the settings
⚠ī¸ Note: Google Maps API has a free tier, but heavy usage may incur charges. Consider setting up billing alerts and API key restrictions in the Google Cloud Console.

Getting Started

RouteViz helps you create animated travel route visualizations. Add your stops, choose transport methods, and generate a route to see it on the map.

Adding Stops

Click "Add Stop" to add locations to your journey. You can:

  • 🔍 Search by name (cities, airports, landmarks)
  • 📍 Enter exact coordinates (latitude/longitude)

Transport Methods

  • ✈ī¸ Flight - Curved great-circle path
  • 🚂 Train - Straight line between stations
  • 🚌 Bus - Follows road routes
  • 🚗 Car - Follows road routes
  • ⛴ī¸ Boat - Curved path over water
  • đŸšļ Walk - Follows walking paths

Animation Controls

  • Travel time - How long each leg takes in the animation
  • Pause at stop - Delay before continuing to next leg
  • Overview/Follow - View entire route or follow the icon
  • Speed - Adjust playback speed

Exporting Video

Three options available:

  • Screen Capture - Best quality, uses browser screen sharing
  • Canvas Capture - No permissions needed, may be slower
  • Manual Recording - Fullscreen playback for external tools like ShareX or OBS

Tips

  • Drag stops to reorder them
  • Click markers on the map to see location details
  • Use longer animation times for dramatic effect
